Our Magnet Program
Kolter Elementary: A Foreign Language and Cultures Magnet School

The Foreign Languages and Cultures Program at Kolter is modeled after the Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES) framework. In Kindergarten, students rotate through each of the three languages offered, Chinese (Mandarin), French, and Spanish, spending approximately six weeks immersed in each. Kindergarten students attend language classes twice a week for 45 minutes, allowing them to experience all three languages and cultures before selecting a primary language of focus. At the end of Kindergarten, families complete a language preference form ranking their choices.
Beginning in 1st grade, students continue taking language classes twice a week for 45 minutes, focusing on one selected language, Chinese (Mandarin), French, or Spanish, as well as the culture associated with that language. Throughout the year, students also continue to learn about all three cultures through schoolwide assemblies, celebrations, and cross-curricular connections.
Language mastery and cultural awareness are developed through an integrated, experiential learning approach that emphasizes listening, speaking, and cultural understanding. Students participate in activities that explore art, history, traditions, and cuisine, and they learn about the techniques and contributions of renowned Chinese, French, and Spanish artists and historical figures.
